Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender, encompassing physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse, as well as harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and forced marriage (WHO, 2024). Victims of GBV, particularly women and children, often experience long-term physical, mental, and emotional consequences. In healthcare settings, nurses play an essential role in identifying, responding to, and providing care for GBV survivors. This involves a multifaceted approach, including medical treatment, psychological support, legal assistance, and ensuring the safety of victims (Fawole & Dauda, 2023).

However, healthcare professionals, especially nurses, often lack the necessary training and preparedness to handle such sensitive and traumatic cases. The skills required for addressing GBV include empathy, the ability to conduct confidential assessments, and familiarity with the protocols for managing such cases. Nurses are typically the first point of contact for survivors in medical facilities, and their ability to provide appropriate care can significantly influence recovery and prevent further harm (Ogunjobi et al., 2023).

Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, located in Benue State, Nigeria, serves as a vital healthcare institution, providing emergency and specialized services, including care for GBV victims. However, there is limited data on nurses' preparedness in addressing gender-based violence at this facility. Understanding the level of preparedness among nurses at the Federal Medical Centre is crucial to improving care for victims of GBV and ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to support both the immediate and long-term needs of survivors.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing recognition of gender-based violence as a public health issue, nurses in many healthcare settings, including Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, may not be adequately prepared to handle such cases. Without the proper knowledge and training, nurses may struggle to provide effective care, leaving survivors vulnerable to further harm. This study aims to examine nurses' preparedness in managing victims of GBV at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, and identify gaps in training, knowledge, and support systems that can be addressed to improve care delivery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, in handling victims of gender-based violence.
  2. To evaluate the training programs available for nurses on managing gender-based violence cases at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in addressing gender-based violence and propose solutions to enhance their preparedness.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of preparedness of nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, in handling victims of gender-based violence?
  2. How effective are the training programs provided to nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, in preparing them to manage GBV cases?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing victims of gender-based violence at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, who have received training on gender-based violence are more prepared to manage GBV cases than those who have not.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' preparedness to handle GBV cases and the quality of care provided to victims.
  3. The challenges nurses face in managing GBV cases are significantly related to inadequate training and a lack of resources.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the emergency, trauma, and general wards of Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, who may encounter victims of gender-based violence. It will assess their preparedness, the training programs they have received, and the challenges they face in addressing GBV. The study will not include nurses working in other facilities or regions, limiting the generalizability of the findings.

A limitation of this study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias. Additionally, the study will focus on gender-based violence without addressing other forms of abuse or violence that may affect patient care.

Definitions of Terms

  • Gender-based violence (GBV): Harmful acts directed at individuals based on their gender, including physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse.
  • Preparedness: The extent to which nurses are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and training to manage cases of GBV effectively.
  • Training programs: Educational interventions designed to equip nurses with the knowledge and skills required to handle victims of GBV.
